1. Beaches are important because loggerhead sea turtles use them to lay their eggs. These beaches have been used by turtles for thousands of years as safe places for nesting.  

 

1. When the young turtles hatch, they find beaches crowded with tourists, with many people walking on the nests and artificial lights that make it difficult for them to find their way to the sea at night.  

 

1. People can help by supporting organizations like the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, which protects turtle nesting beaches and keeps tourists away. Volunteers help monitor the beaches and ensure young turtles safely reach the sea.  

 

• Пляжи важны, потому что головастые морские черепахи используют их для откладывания яиц. Эти пляжи использовались черепахами в течение тысяч лет как безопасные места для гнездования. 

• Когда молодые черепахи вылупляются, они находят пляжи, переполненные туристами, со множеством людей, ходящих по гнездам, и искусственным освещением, которое затрудняет им поиск пути к морю ночью. 

• Люди могут помочь, поддержав такие организации, как Общество защиты морских черепах Греции, которое защищает пляжи, где черепахи гнездятся, и не допускает туристов. Волонтеры помогают следить за пляжами и обеспечивать безопасный доступ молодых черепах к морю.

Three facts: 

1. Scientists estimate that by the year 2100, half of the world’s species may become extinct if current trends continue.  
2. Every year, over 500 volunteers from around the world come to help protect the turtles and their nests.
3. Currently, up to 16,000 species are under threat worldwide.  

 

Ученые подсчитали, что к 2100 году половина видов в мире может вымереть, если нынешние тенденции сохранятся. 

Ежегодно более 500 волонтеров со всего мира приезжают, чтобы помочь защитить черепах и их гнезда. 

В настоящее время под угрозой исчезновения во всем мире находится до 16 000 видов.
