a) Read the possible beginnings and endings of a story entitled ‘Lost in a Blizzard’. Which (A or B) are the most interesting? Why? Which techniques do they use?

  • Beginnings

  1. Do you know, when you just have a feeling deep down inside that you have made a terrible mistake? Well, that day, high up in the mountains, I couldn’t help feeling anxious that we had made a terrible mistake leaving the main mountain path. “Are you sure you know the way back?”, I shouted to Tom, uneasily, trying to be heard above the howling wind.

  1. I thought it was a bad idea that we had left the main mountain path. I asked Tom if he knew the way back, but I didn’t know if he had heard me.

  1. Endings

  1. In the end, I was lifted into the rescue helicopter. The rescue workers still hadn’t found Tom. I didn’t know if I would ever see him again.

  1. As I was lifted into the rescue helicopter, my eyes filled with tears as I thought about Tom still out there, shivering with cold and totally alone. Would I ever be able to forgive myself for leaving Tom? Would I ever see him again?
  1. b) Write an interesting beginning and ending for a story entitled ‘Disaster at Sea!’ Exchange stories with a partner and evaluate each other’s work.

Решение #1

I think A is the most interesting beginning because it creates atmosphere by describing the setting (howling wind, mountains) and expresses the narrator’s feelings of anxiety and doubt. It also uses direct speech, which makes the scene more immediate and vivid. The reader feels the tension and uncertainty right away.

I guess that B is the most engaging ending because it expresses deep feelings (tears, guilt, worry) and ends with rhetorical questions, which create suspense and invite the reader to think about what might happen next. This ending leaves an emotional impact and a sense of mystery.

The sky was dark and heavy, the waves crashing like thunder against the sides of our small boat. I gripped the railing tightly, my heart pounding as the wind howled around us. “Are you sure this storm will pass soon?” I shouted over the roar, but all I got was silence. Deep down, I knew we were in serious trouble.

As the lifeboat drifted away from the sinking ship, I stared into the endless gray sea, my hands trembling. Would anyone survive this nightmare? Would I ever see my family again? The cold bit into my skin, but it was the fear and uncertainty that truly froze me. Only time would tell if this disaster at sea would be our last.
