Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy, although her family was English.

She was born into a wealthy family whose parents expected her to marry and lead a traditional life. However, Florence rejected a marriage proposal to follow her passion for nursing. She trained in nursing, including studying at a nursing school in Germany, and worked as a nurse in London before volunteering to serve in the Crimean War.

After the war, Florence returned to England and became a pioneer in medical reform. In 1860, she founded the Nightingale Training School for Nurses at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. She continued to improve healthcare and nursing standards until she became ill and incapacitated at age 76. She was honored with the Royal Red Cross in 1883 and became the first woman to receive the Order of Merit in 1907.

Florence Nightingale is famous for reducing death rates in military hospitals during the Crimean War by improving sanitation and hygiene. She founded the world’s first secular nursing school and published influential works like Notes on Nursing (1859). She advocated for healthcare reforms in both military and civilian hospitals and introduced advanced statistical methods to analyze healthcare data.

Florence Nightingale died on August 13, 1910.
