Int: Hello, I’m from the local newsagents’ association and we’re doing a survey on people’s reading habits. Would you mind answering a few questions?  

 

1. According to Ann, broadsheet papers are well-written and informative.  

 

Ann: Well, I don’t get one every day but I prefer broadsheet papers because they’re well-written and informative.   

 

1. According to Ann, tabloids don’t provide real news and should be taken with a pinch of salt.  

 

Int: You don’t read tabloids, then.

Ann: No, because you have to take everything they write with a pinch of salt. It’s not really news.   

 

1. Ann thinks the stories in gossip magazines are fun.  

 

Int: What about gossip magazines? Do you ever read them?

Ann: Oh, occasionally. Just for fun. I think everyone enjoys a bit of scandal now and then.   

 

1. Most of the people who were interviewed learn about the world from gossip magazines.    

 

Int: Did you know that nearly all the people who took part in our survey today said that they get most of their information about what’s going on in the world from gossip magazines?

 

• Survey (опрос) — a set of questions that are asked to a large number of people to find out about their opinions or behaviour  
• Informative (информативный) — providing a lot of useful information
• Scandal (скандал) — an action or event that is morally or legally wrong and causes public feelings of shock or strong dislike
• Take part (принимать участие) — to be involved in an activity with other people
• Fiction (вымысел) — a type of book or story that is about imaginary events and people, not real ones
