In the past, people used many different methods to communicate over long distances before modern technology. One interesting method was signalling with mirrors, also known as the heliograph. This device used sunlight reflected by mirrors to send coded messages in Morse code across long distances. It was especially useful in the late 1800s for military communication and could send signals up to 183 miles away.
Another important communication method was the semaphore flag signalling system. This system used towers with pivoting arms or flags to represent different letters and numbers. It was widely used in France starting in 1792 and later adapted for naval communication. Although effective during the day, it could not be used at night or in bad weather.
The invention of the telegraph in the 19th century revolutionized communication by allowing messages to be sent quickly over wires using Morse code. This was the first electrical communication system and greatly improved the speed of information exchange.
