I want to talk to you about why it is crucial to reduce noise pollution near ocean animals, especially marine mammals like whales, dolphins, and seals.  

Hearing is absolutely vital to these animals. Unlike humans, marine mammals rely on sound to navigate, find food, communicate, and protect themselves. Sound travels much better underwater than light, so these animals have evolved to use complex sounds and echolocation to survive. For example, whales use low-frequency sound waves to locate mates and food over hundreds of miles. 

However, human activities such as shipping, offshore drilling, and military sonar have dramatically increased noise levels in the ocean. The ocean is now ten times noisier than it was in 1960. This noise pollution interferes with marine mammals’ communication and navigation. It can cause stress, hearing loss, and even physical injuries. Loud noises like sonar blasts have been shown to cause bleeding in whales’ eyes and organs. Noise can also force animals to leave important breeding or feeding areas, threatening their survival.

 

Therefore, I urge your company to take immediate action to reduce noise pollution in sensitive marine habitats. This could include moving operations away from key areas where marine mammals live, using quieter technologies, and following guidelines to limit noise levels. Environmentalists are advocating for laws and international agreements to control ocean noise, and your cooperation would be a vital step toward protecting these vulnerable animals. By reducing noise, you help preserve the natural world and ensure that marine mammals can continue to thrive.
