Words of Wisdom
Animals share with us the privilege of having a soul.
(Pythagoras, Greek philosopher)
Dian Fossey was an American primatologist and conservationist who devoted her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas in Rwanda. After training as an occupational therapist, she traveled to Africa in 1963, inspired by the work of anthropologist Louis Leakey. In 1967, she founded the Karisoke Research Center in the Virunga Mountains, where she conducted groundbreaking research on gorilla behavior, communication, and social structure.
Fossey developed close relationships with the gorillas, naming them and gaining their trust, which allowed her to observe them closely. She became a fierce opponent of poaching, especially after the killing of her favorite gorilla, Digit, and worked tirelessly to protect the gorillas’ habitat. Her efforts brought international attention to the plight of mountain gorillas and helped increase their population in the wild.
Despite threats and challenges, Fossey continued her conservation work until her tragic murder in 1985, believed to be linked to her anti-poaching stance. Her legacy lives on through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, which continues to protect gorillas, conduct scientific research, train conservationists, and support local communities. Fossey’s life and work remain an inspiring example of courage, dedication, and the impact one person can have on wildlife conservation.
