Условие

The text is about Cézanne using ‘shifting perspectives’. This means that when you look at the painting your eye does not focus just on one main thing in the picture. Look at the paintings again and say how you think the artist has used this technique.

In Château Noir (A), the trees in the foreground and the castle in the background are painted from slightly different angles. The trunks and branches don’t all align in a single perspective, making your eye jump between the dark forest and the illuminated castle. Besides, Paul Cézanne used bright colours and sharp lines to give the castle extra volume in the overall composition.

In Montagne Sainte-Victoire (B), the mountain, trees, and fields are depicted as if seen from multiple viewpoints. The landscape seems to flatten and tilt, so you notice the details in the hills, the sky, and the fields all at once, rather than focusing on just the mountain.

In Jas de Bouffan (C), there is a focus on a red-roofed house centrally positioned within the composition. Cézanne’s deliberate blurring and lack of detail in the foreground emphasizes the house as the primary subject, rather than the immediate foreground.

In L’Estaque with Red Roofs (D), the rooftops, trees, and sea are arranged so that the viewer’s gaze travels from the foreground houses to the blue water and back again. We can see the bright colours of the houses, typical of objects that are close together. At the same time, the lack of detail and blurred outline of the village itself shows that it is still very distant.
