Ecotourism, ecotravel, ecolodges and generally being ‘eco’ have become popular tourism sales pitches. But what is ecotourism and why is it such a great thing, anyway? The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as ‘responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the welfare of local people’. The idea behind this type of tourism is to lessen the damage regular tourism causes to a place. Hotels, walking trails, transport facilities and other things that are built to cater for tourists’ needs can harm the environment. Ecotourism tries to lessen these negative effects. It does so by using either recyclable materials or local building materials. Other ways ecotourism attempts to lessen the negative impact of regular tourism include the use of renewable energy sources as well as safe disposal of waste and rubbish. Also, when constructing tourist accommodation it is essential that the architectural design of the buildings is environmentally and culturally sensitive. Finally, ecotourism aims at educating both tourists and residents of tourist destination on how they can be environmentally responsible holidaymakers and hosts.
