Last Sunday was a bad day for my neighbour, Mr Smith. At around 2 pm, I heard a lot of noise coming from the street in front of my house. I looked out the window, only to see six police officers 1) chasing after Mr Smith all around our neighbourhood. The police officers finally caught up with him and 2) arrested him on the spot. It was obvious that Mr Smith had 3) broken the law. Word has it that he has stolen government money. On that Sunday, Mr Smith was taken into custody until his court date. At first, he refused all charges, but after the evidence was presented to the judge, he had no other choice but to 4) confess to the crime. He was 5) convicted of fraud against the state and 6) sentenced to five years of imprisonment. 

 

1) chasing

Chasing after означает “преследовать”. Полицейские гнались за мистером Смитом. 

 

2) arrested

Arrested = “арестовали”. После того как полицейские догнали мистера Смита, они его задержали.

 

3) broken

Broken the law = “нарушил закон” — устойчивое выражение.  

 

4) confess

Confess to the crime = “признаться в преступлении”

 

5) convicted

Convicted of = “признан виновным в …”

 

6) sentenced

Sentenced to = “приговорён к …”
