It was great to hear from you! Thanks for your letter. I was really interested to hear about the talk on peer pressure at your school.

 

I do sometimes feel pressured by my peers, especially when it comes to things like what clothes to wear or which social events to attend. I think teens put pressure on each other partly because they want to fit in and partly because they’re insecure and want to feel accepted. They’re at a tricky age, exploring their identity. The best way to deal with this is to be confident in yourself and your decisions. Talk to a trusted friend or family member if you’re feeling really pressured and never do anything you don’t feel comfortable with.  Don’t give in.

 

That’s exciting you’re going camping this weekend!  I’ve been curious about camping myself. What kind of campsite are you going to? Will you have a campfire? What’s the weather forecast?

I think I would trust my problems to a school counsellor, especially if I felt I could not talk to my family or friends. I would probably rather speak to an older person for advice. They tend to have more life experience. Most teens I know deal with their problems by talking to friends and family, but some use social media or online forums to connect with others facing similar issues. There are a lot of different ways people choose to cope.

 

I am very interested in your new job. What is the most rewarding aspect of your work? Do you find the students are more open to talking to you than they might have been previously? What challenges have you encountered in your new position?
