a) Work in pairs. Read the rubrics, find the key words, and answer the questions.  

 

  1. Your teacher has asked you to write a story called ‘Trapped!’ Write your story (200-250 words).          
  2. You have decided to enter a short story competition in a magazine. The story must end with the sentence: ‘What a miraculous escape!’ Write your entry for the competition (200-250 words).  

 

  1. Who will read each story?         
  2. What will each story be about?         
  3. Who could the main characters be?        
  4. How many paragraphs will you write and what will you write in each?

Rubric A 

 

  1. The teacher will read the story.
  2. The story will focus on a situation where someone is physically or metaphorically trapped (this could be in a building, cave, elevator, or a difficult situation). 
  3. The main character could be a person (child, adult, explorer, worker) who finds themselves trapped.

 

Rubric B 

 

  1. The magazine’s readers, who enjoy short stories and creative writing, will read the story.
  2. This story will describe a dangerous or challenging situation leading to an unexpected or lucky escape. 
  3. The main character could be an adventurer, a sailor, a lost hiker, or anyone facing danger. 

 

Both rubrics 

 

  1. For both stories, I’m going to write 4 paragraphs:  

 

Paragraph 1: Introducing the setting and main characters.  

Paragraph 2: Describing the situation leading to being trapped or in danger.

Paragraph 3: Showing the struggle or conflict faced by the characters. 

Paragraph 4: Describing the escape.
